Short division

Division is the process of dividing or sharing something in equal parts. It is the opposite of multiplication.

Each part of the division has a different name.

Dividend: The number which is divided is called the dividend.

Divisor: The number by which we divide is called the divisor.

Quotient: The answer to the division problem is a quotient.

For Example:

There are different methods of division.

Chunking Method:

Chunk means parts. In the chunking method, we repeatedly subtract the divisor or the multiples of the divisor from the dividend.

For example:

To divide 48 by 4, we can subtract chunks of 4.

So, 48 ÷ 4 = 10 + 2 = 12

Short division Method

This method is also called the ‘bus stop method’. In this method, we start dividing the dividend from the left-hand side by the divisor.

Example :

Step 1: 4 goes into 4 one time. So, we will write 1 at the top.

Step 2: 4 goes into 8 two times. So, we will write 2 at the top.

48 ÷ 4 = 12
