## Recognise & Describe 3-d Shapes

3D means three-dimensional.

3D shapes are solid shaped and have 3 dimensions – Length, Width, and Height.

These shapes have vertices, faces and edges.

A face is a flat surface.

An edge is a line between two faces.

vertex(corner) is a point where two edges meet.

Let’s learn about the properties of different 3D shapes.

Cuboid

A cuboid is a 3d shape made up of rectangles and squares.

A cuboid has:

• 6 faces: 4 rectangular and 2 square

• 8 vertices

• 12 edges

Cube

A cube is a box-shaped solid object. It is made up of squares.

A cube has:

• 6 faces (all squared)

• 8 vertices

• 12 edges

Sphere

A sphere is round in shape like a ball.

A sphere has:

• One curved face

Cylinder

A cylinder is a can-like 3d shape.

A cylinder has

• 3 faces 2 circular and 1 rectangular

• 2 curved edges

Cone

A cone is a cap liked 3d shape.

It has

• One circular face

• One vertex

Let’s answer some questions:

Question 1: Identify the shape that has

1.   3 faces- 2 circular and 1 rectangular

2.   2 curved edges

A cylinder is a can-like 3d shape. A cylinder has 3 faces i.e. 2 circular and 1 rectangular. A cylinder has 2 curved edges.

Question 2:

A cuboid has ____ faces, _____ vertices and _____ edges.

Explanation:

A cuboid is a 3d shape that has

• 6 faces: 4 rectangular and 2 square

• 8 vertices

• 12 edges

A cuboid has 6 faces, 8 vertices, and 12 edges.
