Recognise & Describe 2-d Shapes

2D Shapes

A 2D (two-dimensional) shape is flat with only two dimensions.

For example, the Football field is rectangular.

Properties of 2d shapes

Properties mean the features of different shapes. It includes:

→ number of sides

→ length of sides

→ number of vertices

→ types of angles

→ parallel or perpendicular lines

Let us discuss the properties of different 2d shapes.

Circle

A circle is a flat round 2d shape.
It is made up of one curved line.

Triangle

A triangle is a 2d shape with three sides.

Quadrilateral

A quadrilateral is a 2D shape made up of 4 straight sides.

Let’s learn about the properties of different quadrilaterals.

Square

In a square,

  • All the sides are of equal length

  • All the angles are right angles (90°)

  • Opposite sides are parallel

Rectangle

In a rectangle,

  • Opposite sides are equal

  • Opposite sides are parallel

  • All the angles are right angles (90°)

Parallelogram

In a Parallelogram,

  • Opposite sides are equal.

  • Opposite sides are parallel.

  • Opposite angles are equal.

Rhombus

In a Rhombus,

  • All the sides are equal

  • Opposite angles are equal

  • Opposite sides are parallel

Trapezium

In a Trapezium,

  • One pair of lines is parallel

  • Two sets of equal angles

Other 2d shapes

Pentagon

Pentagon has:

  • Five equal sides

  • Five equal angles

Hexagon

Hexagon has:

  • Six equal sides

  • Six equal angles

Heptagon

Heptagon has:

  • Seven equal sides

  • Seven equal angles

Octagon

Octagon has:

  • Eight equal sides

  • Eight equal angles

Lets’ try to answer the questions now.

Question 1:

Name the shape by using the hints.

→ Sides of this shape are of equal length.

→ All the angles of this shape are right angles (90°)

→ The opposite sides of this shape are parallel.

Explanation:

All the sides of the square are of equal length.

All the angles of the square are right angles (90°)

The opposite sides of the square are parallel.

Question 2: Hexagon has ____ equal sides and ____ same angles.

Explanation:

The hexagon has six equal sides and six angles that are equal.

The hexagon has six equal sides and six same angles.
