12-hour and 24-hour clocks

12-hour clock: The day is divided into two periods of 12 hours each.

The first period starts at midnight and ends at noon (AM).

The second period starts at noon and ends at midnight(PM).

24-hour clock: In the 24-hour clock, we use numbers 1-24 to represent hours.

We do not write AM or PM when we use the 24-hour clock.

Conversion between 12-hour clock and 24-hour clock.

For example:

12 hour time = 11:00 PM

We know that in a 24 hour clock 1:00 PM = 13:00, 2:00 PM = 14:00 and so on.
Therefore, in a 24 hour clock, 11:00 PM = 23:00

Let’s try a question!

Question: True or false?

Solution: 12:00 AM means midnight. A new day starts at 12:00 AM. In a 24-hour clock, a new day starts from 00:00 hours. So 12:00 AM in a 24-hour clock is written as 00:00. Therefore, it is false.
